TITLE: Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA): School-Based Volunteer Program Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Assigned school staff and HFUW supervisor

STATUS: This is a 1-year assignment funded through the Federal government’s Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). VISTA member receives a modest living allowance (approximately $946/month) and end of service educational award ($5,645) or cash stipend ($1,500). POSITION OBJECTIVE: This VISTA position is contracted to assist with the Schools and Communities: Together for Tomorrow program that is being managed by the Heart of Florida United Way. The program is a concept developed by the US Department of Education and the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships to engage faith-based and community organizations in an effort to propel school improvement.

This VISTA position will work at a designated school to recruit, screen, train, engage and monitor volunteers from the community in activities that: • Boost student attendance and reduce tardiness • Improve student academic performance • Increase positive student behaviors • Increase student desire and motivation toward post-secondary education

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: • Assist school staff as needed to identify students to participate in activities • Recruit volunteers and other community partners • Monitor the volunteer screening process • Develop/provide appropriate volunteer training • Monitor and track program activities • Monitor volunteer performance; provide feedback • Assist with program evaluation • Work in coordination with HFUW supervisor and other VISTAs • Complete activity and progress reports as requested • Coordinate and manage special volunteer recruitment events

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time; bending, regularly moving between buildings and floors, regular use of the telephone, copier, fax and computer. Reliable transportation required. Job involves frequent and routinely intense public contact as well as protracted concentration.


Education Requirements: • Associates degree, preferred areas of study: education, public administration, public relations/communications

Experience Requirements: • Experience coordinating volunteers • Strong oral communication and presentation skills • Project management experience • Experience working with youth, at-risk or poverty-stricken populations a plus • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
